Knee Replacements Are Double Delight For Farmer
Monday 6 November 2017

A patient has experienced double joy after having both his knees replaced within months of each other at Rowley Hall Hospital.

Farmer Robert Cartmail is enjoying a pain free life again after having surgery on his right knee first and then his left.

He was in discomfort with both joints which had deteriorated due to a lifetime in farming.

Robert battled through the pain barrier for three years before his GP referred him to Rowley Hall to see a specialist.

He met with hip and knee expert Mr Amit Patel who explained that knee replacements were the best way forward.

The 71-year-old attended the Stafford-based private hospital for surgery and then returned just months for his second operation.

Robert, of Eccleshall, said: “I knew my knees were both in a bad way. It has been years of farming which have taken their toll with it being a physical job and getting on and off tractors.

“I kept putting it off even though I was in pain but if I had left it another 18 months or so I would have been in a wheelchair so it was a good decision to have them both done.”

Robert was familiar with Rowley Hall after having a previous hernia operation and he was delighted to be referred to

He added: “Rowley Hall is like the Buckingham Palace of hospitals to me. I was impressed the first time I went for surgery but having both my knees replaced has made me realise even more what a wonderful hospital it is.

“The consultant Mr Patel was excellent, as were all the staff on the ward and in the physiotherapy department.”

Mr Patel is a specialist in hip replacements, knee surgery, knee replacements, knee arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and cartilage regeneration.

Robert is now delighted to be getting back up to full speed and is looking forward to helping out on his farm again.

Robert added: “The progress I’ve made has been phenomenal really in a short space of time.

“I’m like a different person and when you’ve been an active person all your life it’s very frustrating when you can’t move around as freely because of the pain.

“I can’t do the same work as I used to but I’m looking forward to helping my son out on the farm again and jobs like milking the cows, which I used to take for granted, will be easier now I’ve had my operations.

“I feel so relieved now. No-one likes going to hospital so I was a bit apprehensive but all the staff make your staff as comfortable as possible.

“I would highly recommend Rowley Hall Hospital to anyone. It’s just impossible to fault it.”
